The day started with ‘work’ which was finding an assortment of chargers for laptops, phones, cameras and assorted devices which kept us in touch with the outside world (lest we anger our loved ones). I bet Ted Simon (one of the original overlanders in 1973) never had this problem. After buying some very suspect electrical devices from the market we were stoked that nothing exploded or caught fire when we got back to the hostel. I hope Mr Panasonic doesn’t read this blog, because I think I definitely voided my camera warranty.
We then headed straight to Jonsey’s as he promised we could borrow some boards the evening before. We were 2 hours late (as is our custom) and had obviously missed him. We were disappointed, Bali was hot, and the disappointment fuelled our desire to get out of Kuta and chase some waves.
After finding Bingin Beach we fluked some cheap and good accommodation ($12 a night), and chased up some boards. There was a gnarly little reef break out the front with a deadly shallow end section called ‘greedies’ (for obvious reasons). I got greedy and took a chunk out of the boards nose. Better then my face I suppose (although Shaun said it would be an improvement).
We ran into a new friend called Kevin who is an ex-pat, but has lived here for 10 years, and seems to have the place wired (for the best places to eat and drink at least). He also invited us into his house and played us some of his awesome original songs.
If we ever make a movie out of this Kevin is the soundtrack. Kevin is one of the richest dudes I have met – not in dollars, but the important stuff like friends, scoring waves and living free.
In other news I am riding an avalanche of emails and calls to get our bikes back, arrange a Myanmar visa and riding permits, and book the next freight to Malaysia. THE GREAT ESCAPE...
