We made a new friend in Aki Pich - while Dan and I were chasing a rear tyre for his WR250R, owner and runner of ‘Cambodia Trails’ dirt bike tours. After making some phone calls, Aki found us a tyre on the other side of town, and I suspect Aki was testing our riding skills as he blasted off into traffic while Dan and I frantically tried to keep up with Aki’s KTM.
After losing Aki a few times and making a few lucky guesses to find the bike shop, I arrived at the shop and pretended that that was a normal speed I was comfortable with, and I had no problems keeping up.
Anyway, back to Aki’s shop for the tyre change and this was when the real problems started – the problem was his shop was full of cool bikes, and there was a convenience store with 50c beer next door. Swells arrived, back from his gnarly Thailand solo ride, we had to celebrate... The ensuing shenanigans are, again, best left off the internet but include (in no particular order) drinking, smoking, heavy metal, motorbikes, getting lost, bullshit, stacks, burns and yours truly sleeping in a Cambodian shopfront at 3AM to be woken by a gentleman offering sexual favours (which for the record I politely declined).
In summary, Aki is an all-round hell-man. If anyone ever wants to see Cambodia on a dirt bike tour, use Aki - he can ride, has good English, and is honest, helpful and trustworthy. His company is Cambodia Trails. www.angkordirtbike.com
