I woke to the best camp spot you could imagine, to the sounds of grazing waterbuffalo and peeling lefts. Checking the surf was as easy as opening my eyes and propping an elbow. My bike and surfboard where next to me. This is the life.
Well, it was the life. Reality in the shape of an unkempt, poorly-bearded man crashed my camp. My road ravaged travel companion knew we had to be at the ferry to Sumatra this afternoon. 360km won’t sound like a lot to some - but it is an eternity on Indonesian roads.
No time for surf we are late. Return the boards, pack the bikes, say our goodbyes. Back on the road. Same old story.
We made our way up the coast, stumbling across hundreds of empty, surfable breaks. This leg of the trip was meant to be the ‘surf’ leg, but visa commitments have dictated otherwise. I barely had time to take the below photo (which needed 2 key ingredients – a surfboard and about 6 hours of spare time).
We met Shaun at the ferry and made our way over the Java Sea. It was good to have the team back together (not that I would ever admit that I missed the procrastination-prone idiot). We used the opportunity to try to sleep and strategize the next move – getting our bikes to Malaysia.
