Today was the epitome of the perfect trip-day. Just the right mix of motorbikes, surfing, exploration, adventure and Bintang (perhaps too much of the latter, but the opportunities to relax are seldom and need to be grasped whenever possible).
Al is a new friend we met in the surf and he was stoked on our adventure. So much so, he hired a scooter and participated in today’s excursion up the coast in search of waves. We weren’t disappointed with a 5ft crumbly left with a good wall. It reminded me of Alexandra Headland if it were a left and there was no-one else out.
I love the experience of trying to dial in a new wave with no idea where to jump off the rocks, where to sit or where to take off. Things were sketchy at first and I almost got dragged across the reef a few times, but I never touched, and a good surf was had by the three of us once we had the place figured-out.
On the way back Dan got our first tyre puncture of the trip. Luckily Al - our stand in team member - was there to help because I had taken the fast lane back to the bar for some well-earned adventure juice. While Dan was toiling on the side of the road I was at the bar observing that all my worldly possessions (passport, phone, sat phone, camera, leatherman) fit into a hat. It is a very liberating feeling. And don’t feel bad for Dan – he had a team of helpers and the new tube only cost $5 and 15mins.
Thanks to Evan from Nurders surf hotel for letting me crash in his yard, and looking after us on our stay.
