Leaving early I felt alive with optimism, we had a strong lead from our friends last night. The roads were fast and free flowing, the majority of traffic streamed from the other direction. This can pose a certain type of hazard, while the slowest truck in front meanders its way along the accumulating traffic behind quickly becomes impatient. Often it’s the buses who are the worst - affectionately known in our circle as a death bus. The death bus can often be found poking its head around a slower moving obstacles looking ahead for a clear run. They will overtake forcing oncoming traffic to the shoulder clear run or not – hence their name.
Our good luck with roads continued as we racked up k after k. We stopped in for lunch at a shop which advertised Nasi Georings. The simple structure consisted of a corrugated iron roof support by a bare timber exposed frame, somewhat resembling a shed. The floor was uneven compacted dirt. There was a small deck about 2 by 2 meters in the middle of the structure. We sat down at a low very clean table to absorb the vibe. About the back third of the structure was portioned off with a mezzanine floor constructed under the roof, it was the family house as well as their restaurant. The man of the house quickly got to work firing up two massive speakers which he must have got from an abandon disco tech somewhere. The Nasi was excellent fuel for my hungry guts, it was one of the best I have had on the trip.

Closing in on our target the roads became wider and we got faster. The spiritual element of the area was present in the form of Mosque’s and beautiful Islamic inspired architecture. Without prejudice I found that despite the changing predominate religion throughout Indonesia we have found friendly happy people. A good person is a good person regardless their religion or lack of it.
We entered Pekanbaru under a shroud of darkness, a shroud which could not conceal the city of its beauty. The large roads pumped a stream of lights throughout its glowing structures. Adding our lights to the radiant glow we navigated a path within the traffic stream which terminated at the hotel Winstar.
