By day the hotel we had stayed in lost some the haunted house feel it inspired last night, but the feelings of past echoes remain. The popular hypothesis in the group that it was built with a large budget 15 or so years ago to cater for a constant stream of tourists, however the tourists never arrived and the grand hotel has been slowly decaying ever since.
We have decided to tackle the shipping obstacle ourselves, with the backup plan being if all else fails we can simply board Mr, Lim’s boat a week late. Our plan of attack is to roll into every port town we can find on our maps in search of a suitable boat. Palembang - a river port 101 k’s away was our first destination. The ride to Palembang was an enjoyable mission, dodging the slower moving rural traffic and the ever present potholes the ride only took 2 hours.
We arrived to find Palembang a large sprawling old river port city - full of colour and commotion. The streets were packed and vibrated with energy, people were everywhere. We aimed our bikes towards the water and followed the rivers lead in search of a solid boat and willing captain.
In our search along the river we came across some kids walking home from school, their excitement in seeing us provided energies for our adventure stoke.
Unable to find a port we pulled in for directions. A friendly local shop-keep provided us with a list of place names further north with possible ports, which we soon confirmed at a customs compound we stumbled upon.
With darkness approaching we left the river city and headed towards Jambi…
